Markson's Wittgenstein's Mistress got a huge plug from David Foster Wallace, but Markson's index-card tetraology of Reader's Block, This is Not a Novel, Vanishing Point, and The Last Novel, are to me, more rereadable. Not very much happens in any conventional sense in this book. There's a couple of extended book reviews included in Both Flesh And Not – 'The Empty Plenum: David Markson's Wittgenstein's Mistress' and 'Rhetoric and the Math Melodrama'. So here in Wittgenstein's Mistress we have a woman, in an world empty of people (and, eventually, we learn of all living creatures) writing her life as a signal to whomever might be there, which is, also eventually, no one. Above is David Markson's handwritten list covering the 54 rejections his classic novel Wittgenstein's Mistress received. Ou encore un récit linguistique. Ever in the world on Proust; and even little blurbs, here and there, such as David Foster Wallace's single paragraph in Salon on Wittgenstein's Mistress (preferable to the 50 page disaster republished in Both Flesh and Not). Mais c'était peut-être un essai philosophique. Ou une histoire de la peinture. Rejecting Wittgenstein's Mistress. Next is a lengthy 1990 review of David Markson's novel Wittgenstein's Mistress, which lets Wallace return to the philosopher whose work he discussed heavily in his first novel, The Broom Of The System. Je me souviens de son roman, « Wittgenstein's mistress ». Wittgenstein's Mistress, a novel by David Markson, 1988.
